The enquiry

The client was looking to incorporate a few terraced areas into their garden to accommodate their garden furniture and provide new places to entertain and relax. They considered a number of different materials to lay down, including sandstone and porcelain but ended up agreeing on these antique-style paving bricks. The bricks match the style of the house brilliantly and are very sympathetic to the age and history of the surrounding area.

The job

We started the project by taking in the digger and clearing the areas where we going to lay the bricks. This allowed us to perfectly level the ground being starting the lay the bricks one by one!

As you can image, this was by far the most time consuming aspect of the job as each brick is hand laid and levelled. 

As we moved down to build the lower terrace, the client had a design brainwave and asked us to change the pattern from a herringbone effect to basket weave. This produces a new area of interest for the eye, clearly seperating it from the other levels.

Finally we went back over the entire area and pointed up the bricks with a colour of the client’s choice.

What do we love about it?

This is a design to last the test of time – its timeless elegance makes it seem as though its been in situ for an age and, it being made of such a hardwearing material, will continue to be there for many more years to come.
